Although all old coins have some type of value—even if it’s just sentimental—some coins have a lot more value than others. This post will cover the most valuable coins worth collecting in Mill Valley, CA so you can know what to look for in your collection!
1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent
The United States changed the one-cent design to Abe Lincoln’s head in 1909 to commemorate what would’ve been his 100th birthday. Unfortunately, the penny’s designer Victor David Brenner irked mint engraver Charles Barber by placing his three initials (V.D.B.) near the bottom of the penny. Due to his frustration, the U.S. Mint only produced 484,000 of the pennies featuring Brenner’s initials. The scarcity of the V.D.B. Lincoln Cent makes it the “Holy Grail” of Lincoln pennies among collectors.
1914-D Lincoln Cent
With 1,193,000 produced, there should theoretically be more 1914-D Lincoln Cent in circulation than the pennies mentioned above. However, that’s not the case! Uncirculated specimens were not saved in the same quantities as the V.D.B. coins, so they’re actually scarcer. Expert coin collectors are always on the hunt for the uncirculated 1914-D Lincoln Cents.
1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel
As appraisers will tell you, pieces with errors are often some of the most valuable coins worth collecting in Mill Valley, CA. The 1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel is a perfect example. Due to an error at the Mint, many of these nickels were produced with only three legs on the buffalo.
The good news is that circulated editions of these coins can be purchased for a moderate price, but you’ll have to pay top dollar to acquire an uncirculated specimen.
1916-D Mercury Dime
Another coin that’ll cost a “pretty penny” to acquire is the 1916-D Mercury Dime. Only 264,000 were ever produced, so the rarity of the coin—which is properly named the Winged Liberty Head Dime—makes it a treasure among intermediate and advanced collectors.
1932-D Washington Quarter
The Washington quarter was only ever intended to be a one-year edition to commemorate George Washington’s 200th birthday. However, the design was so popular that the U.S. Mint kept the design, and it’s still in use today. The 1932-D quarter is scarce and is a great addition to any collection, especially if it’s a San Francisco issue.
1908 St. Gaudens Arabic Numerals No Motto
Many coin collectors would agree that the St. Gaudens $20 gold coin is the most beautiful coin ever made by the U.S. Mint. And the 1908 version is in high demand due to the fact that it’s missing the “In God we trust” motto on the back. Even though it’s made of gold, collectors can purchase the 1908 coin for a reasonable price.
